Tangle-based products: an advantage over blockchain

The video games industry is an area for practical usage of many amazing innovations. Some of them are technical – like new hardware for gaming PCs and consoles. Others are cultural – like new ways to deliver a game story or implement a visual beauty. The progressive technology of distributed ledger is unique here. It’s a “complicated thing inside of computers”, and still, it influences many aspects of our real life. DLT combines technical and cultural achievements of gaming, becoming the next revolutionary boost for the industry.

The technology of distributed ledger is often known for its models. Blockchain and Tangle are two of them. Both have a practical use in the game industry – but which is better?

Paracosm Project has chosen Tangle. In this article, we would like to explain the reasons for this decision.

DLT in gaming

First of all, let’s take a look at the role of distributed ledger in the game industry.

We witness two interconnected trends here. On one hand, user data becomes quite valuable. Virtual assets cost real money, game history and various achievements bring precious, emotion-filled memories. On the other hand, “traditional” gaming platforms prove their inability to keep this data. Frauds of all sorts try to steal virtual values and to adjust important information. Such crimes and many pitiful situations would be impossible with DLT in charge.

Many free games offer paid items to players. This is a way to monetize a "game as a service". In PUBG, Dota 2, Fortnite, and Apex Legends offer strictly cosmetic items for real money.

The existence of distributed registry and its introduction to gaming is possible thanks to technological evolution – the increased power of hardware and improved speed of Internet connection. Then, DLT impacts the game culture by opening new possibilities for developers in games monetization and internal mechanics.

“How many transactions, man?”

DLT is a common term. It’s implemented into working phenomena as various products, with Tangle and blockchain as the most prominent. Theoretically, both play their roles in gaming perfectly well. For both, the database is kept in multiple places, synchronized between all the keepers. The principle of decentralization is one of the primary powers of DLT.

So, why Tangle then? The very architecture of blockchain limits the number of transactions, possible for a particular period of time, and it becomes very demanded to hardware while dealing with big data.

Developing a DLT-based gaming product now, we should think about its (not very distant) future. Gamers create lots of data by their virtual adventures. They gain items in exciting missions, use them in various tournaments, sell them to each other – everything of this should be written in DLT.

This scheme shows the architecture difference between distributed ledgers of Tangle and blockchain.

In Tangle, by making a transaction, users confirm two other random transactions. Here is no chain of blocks that grows longer and gains weight with time flow. Here is an interconnected stream of approved transactions, or new entries to the database.

The same advantage of Tangle has become decisive for Jaguar Land Rover to partner with IOTA and pay drivers with IOTA for providing useful data.

Paracosmic Tangle

The Paracosm platform and Caer Sidi service will be built on the Tangle technology. In-game history, various achievements, and information about virtual assets will be written in the distributed ledger (registry). The same is the situation with games, connected to our ecosystem, developed by the Paracosm Team (Post Scriptum) or by our partners (Altar)

Thanks to Tangle, we will be able to implement the features of Cross-Reality. The same data will be kept in virtual objects and in their real-world analogs. Focus on VR, AR, and Cross-Reality is a priority for the development of Paracosm Project.

Implementing ideas of Caer Sidi will be a significant addition to the Internet of Things initiative. In-game objects get a much more substantial form thanks to Tangle, so gamers will be able to really own these assets and keep the value of virtual collections even if the games are moved to the shelves of history. Trading operations get a new level with the distributed ledger. And this boosts up the whole industry.
